What is a bitumen storage tank?
A bitumen storage tank is an insulated steel tank with internal heating coils that keeps bitumen liquid and at a controlled temperature until it is pumped to the asphalt mixer, a sprayer or a loading point. Tanks are built vertical for large volumes on a small footprint, or horizontal for easier transport and installation, and in mobile versions on a chassis.
How is a bitumen tank heated?
The most common method is a thermal oil heater that circulates hot oil through coils inside the tank and through jacketed lines. Electric heating suits smaller tanks and sites with reliable power, and steam is used where a steam supply already exists. Insulation, usually mineral wool with metal cladding, keeps heat loss and fuel use low.
What temperature should bitumen be stored at?
Keep it no hotter than needed. Eurobitume guidance gives, for example, about 120 °C for short-term storage of 50/70 bitumen and about 80 °C for storage longer than a month, rising to working temperature only before use. Heating coils must stay fully covered to avoid local overheating.
Main parts of the tank
Tank shell and insulation
Welded steel shell with mineral wool insulation and metal cladding.
Heating coils
Thermal oil, steam or electric elements distributed in the lower part of the tank.
Temperature control
Sensors, thermostats and a panel to hold the set temperature.
Bitumen pump and lines
Heated pump and jacketed pipes for filling and discharge.
Safety equipment
Level gauge, vent, overflow and manhole; high-temperature cut-off.
Agitator (optional)
For PMB or emulsion storage, to keep the product uniform.

Questions buyers ask
How is bitumen kept hot in a storage tank?
With heating coils inside the tank, usually supplied by a thermal oil heater, plus thick insulation. A temperature controller switches heating on and off to hold the set point.
What temperature is bitumen stored at?
It depends on grade and time. Eurobitume gives about 120 °C short term and about 80 °C long term for 50/70 bitumen; harder grades are stored warmer and softer grades cooler.
Vertical or horizontal bitumen tank?
Vertical tanks store more on less ground. Horizontal tanks are easier to transport, install and relocate, and are common at asphalt plants.
What size bitumen tank do I need?
Size the tank to your daily bitumen use multiplied by the number of days of stock you want to hold, then allow for delivery size. A tanker delivery should fit with room to spare.
Is electric heating cheaper than thermal oil?
It depends on local power and fuel prices. Thermal oil is usually more economical for large tanks and plants; electric heating is simpler for small tanks.
