What does the dryer do in an asphalt plant?

The rotary dryer is an inclined steel drum that turns while a burner fires hot gas through it. Lifting flights welded inside the drum carry aggregate up and drop it as a curtain through the gas stream, so moisture evaporates and the stone reaches mixing temperature. Dried aggregate leaves the drum hot, and the exhaust gas and dust go to the filter.

The dryer is the largest energy user on an asphalt plant. Industry data from the US National Asphalt Pavement Association shows that each 1% of aggregate moisture adds about 10% to drying fuel, and that worn flights, an uninsulated shell and an untuned burner all raise consumption. Dryer size, flight design and burner capacity are therefore chosen together for the plant’s output at your typical aggregate moisture.

Which burner fuel is best?

Natural gas burns cleanest where a pipeline exists. Diesel and heavy fuel oil are widely available on remote sites, and heavy oil needs heating before it is sprayed. Dual-fuel burners let you switch with fuel prices.

Key components

Main parts

Drum shell

Inclined steel drum, often with insulation and cladding to cut heat loss.

Lifting flights

Internal flights that create an even curtain of aggregate through the hot gas.

Riding rings and trunnion rollers

Forged rings and rollers that carry and turn the drum.

Drive system

Motors and gear units, often with frequency control.

Burner

Liquid, gas or dual-fuel burner with modulating control.

Inlet and outlet hoods

Seal the drum ends and lead exhaust gas to the filter.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask

How does an asphalt dryer drum work?

The inclined drum rotates while a burner blows hot gas through it. Flights lift aggregate and drop it through the gas, which removes moisture and heats the stone before it goes to the screen or mixing zone.

How does aggregate moisture affect fuel use?

Moisture is the biggest factor. NAPA data shows each 1% of moisture adds roughly 10% to drying fuel, so covered, well-drained stockpiles reduce costs.

What is the difference between counterflow and parallel flow dryers?

In a counterflow dryer aggregate moves against the gas flow, which recovers more heat. In a parallel flow dryer both move in the same direction. Batch plants generally use counterflow dryers.

Can a dryer be replaced on an existing plant?

Yes. Give us the plant capacity, current drum size, burner fuel and layout, and we will source a matching drum, burner or flight set.
