Vertical or horizontal?

Vertical silos store large volumes on a small footprint and discharge by gravity. They are bolted together on site, so they ship in containers and can be extended later. Horizontal silos sit low on their own frame, need no foundation and move with a mobile plant. A built-in screw conveyor and level sensors control discharge.

Comparing the two

See the table below. Most permanent plants use vertical silos; mobile and ultra-mobile plants often use horizontal silos.

Equipment and options

  • Filling pipe, dust filter, pressure relief valve and level indicators.
  • Butterfly valve and screw conveyor to the cement weigher.
  • Aeration pads for smooth discharge.
  • Silo load cells, ladders, platforms and safety rails.
  • Galvanised or painted finish.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask

How many tonnes of cement does a silo hold?

It depends on bulk density. As a rough guide, cement settles at about 1.2 to 1.4 t per m³. The manufacturer states tonnage in the offer.

Can vertical silos be shipped in containers?

Yes. Bolted silos are delivered as panels and assembled on site.

Do horizontal silos need a foundation?

No. They stand on their own frame on compacted ground.
