What is a hot mix asphalt storage silo?
A hot mix silo is an insulated steel silo, usually with a heated discharge cone, that stores finished asphalt between the mixer and the trucks. A skip hoist or slat conveyor carries the mix to the top of the silo, and gates at the bottom load trucks quickly. Silos can be built beside the plant or directly under the mixing tower.
Why add storage silos?
Without storage, the plant must stop whenever no truck is waiting, and each stop and restart wastes fuel. NAPA notes that more than three starts and stops per shift can raise fuel use by 20 to 35%. Silos let the plant run at a steady rate, hold several mix types at once and meet peaks in demand.
How long can asphalt be stored in a silo?
It depends on the mix, the silo insulation and heating, and the specification. Well insulated silos with heated cones keep standard mixes workable for several hours, and longer storage is possible with suitable mixes and checks on temperature and drain-down.
Main parts
Silo body and insulation
Steel silo with mineral wool insulation and cladding.
Heated discharge cone and gates
Thermal oil or electric heating, pneumatic or hydraulic gates.
Skip hoist or slat conveyor
Carries mix from the mixer to the silo top.
Distribution chute
Directs each batch to the selected silo compartment.
Level and temperature monitoring
Shows content and temperature in the control cabin.
Truck weighbridge (optional)
Weighs loads under the silo for dispatch records.
Specifications
Typical values from manufacturer documentation. Final figures are confirmed in the manufacturer's offer for your project.
| Construction | Insulated steel, heated cone |
|---|---|
| Loading | Skip hoist or slat conveyor |
| Compartments | Single or multiple |
| Volume | Selected to plant output and dispatch; confirmed per offer |
Silo volume is usually set from hourly output and the dispatch pattern of trucks.
Built for these buyers
Commercial asphalt producers
Serve many trucks and mix types without stopping the plant.
Plants with uneven truck arrival
Keep production steady when hauling is irregular.
Questions buyers ask
What is a hot mix storage silo used for?
It stores finished asphalt so the plant can keep producing while trucks are not at the loading point, and lets trucks load quickly.
How long can hot mix asphalt stay in a silo?
Several hours for standard mixes in insulated silos with heated cones; longer with suitable mixes and temperature checks. The specification for your project sets the limit.
Do silos save fuel?
Yes, indirectly. They reduce plant stops and starts, which NAPA links to 20 to 35% higher fuel use when there are more than three per shift.
Can several mix types be stored at once?
Yes, with several silos or a multi-compartment silo and a distribution chute.
