How an impact crusher works
A horizontal shaft impact (HSI) crusher throws the feed against breaker plates with blow bars mounted on a fast rotor. Rock breaks along its natural weak lines, which gives a cubical product and a high reduction ratio in one stage. Impact crushers suit limestone, dolomite, soft to medium rock and recycled concrete and asphalt. For very hard, abrasive rock a cone crusher is usually cheaper to run.
Three duties
- Primary impact crushers take feed up to 1.3 m and can replace a jaw and secondary crusher on soft rock.
- Secondary impact crushers reduce jaw crusher product to chips with good shape and fewer fines.
- Tertiary impact crushers make manufactured sand and fine chips for concrete and asphalt.
Features to compare
- Cast or reinforced rotor with 2, 3 or 4 blow bars.
- Reversible blow bars and premium alloy or ceramic insert options for longer wear life.
- Hydraulic adjustment of the breaker plates and hydraulic opening for maintenance.
- Tramp relief and wide inspection doors.

Questions buyers ask
Impact crusher or cone crusher?
Impact crushers give better shape and higher reduction on soft to medium rock and recycling material. Cone crushers wear less on hard, abrasive rock such as basalt and granite.
Can a primary impact crusher replace a jaw crusher?
On soft rock and recycled concrete, yes. It can do in one stage what a jaw and a secondary crusher do together.
Can you supply blow bars?
Yes. Through our Direct Supply line we supply blow bars and liners, with OEM-equivalent and alternative options.
