What is RAP?

RAP (reclaimed asphalt pavement) is old asphalt removed by milling or full-depth removal. It still contains aggregate and bitumen, so it can replace part of the new aggregate and binder in a mix, which lowers material cost and waste.

What equipment is needed to recycle asphalt?

RAP is first crushed and screened to a consistent size and kept in low, separate stockpiles. It is then fed to the plant through a dedicated RAP bin and belt with weighing. In a hot mix plant RAP can enter cold into the mixer or drum mixing zone, or be heated separately. In a cold recycling plant it is mixed with emulsion or foamed bitumen in a pugmill.

How much RAP can go into new asphalt?

It depends on the plant and the specification. Cold RAP fed into a batch plant is usually limited to a modest share because it is heated only by superheated new aggregate. Plants with a separate RAP dryer or a counterflow drum can use much more; US EPA data cites up to 50% RAP for counterflow drum plants.

Production process

From milled road to new mix

Step 01

Collection

Milled or removed pavement is hauled to the plant yard.

Step 02

Crushing and screening

A crusher and screen reduce RAP to a uniform maximum size and remove oversize.

Step 03

Stockpiling

RAP is kept in low, separate piles to limit moisture and clumping.

Step 04

Feeding and weighing

A RAP bin with lump breaker and weighing belt doses RAP to the recipe.

Step 05

Mixing

RAP joins the mix cold in the mixer or drum, heated in a separate dryer, or cold in a pugmill.

Key components

Main equipment

RAP crusher and screen

Crushes slabs and lumps and screens RAP into one or two size fractions.

RAP feed bin

Bin with steep walls, vibrator or lump breaker against bridging.

Weighing belt

Measures RAP flow and links it to the bitumen dosing.

Cold RAP inlet

Feed collar or chute into the drum mixing zone or batch mixer.

RAP dryer (optional)

Separate drum for heating RAP when high recycling rates are required.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask

What is reclaimed asphalt pavement?

RAP is asphalt removed from existing roads by milling or excavation. It is crushed and screened and reused as aggregate and binder in new mixes.

Can I add RAP to my existing asphalt plant?

Usually yes. Most batch and drum plants can be fitted with a RAP bin, weighing belt and RAP inlet. The achievable percentage depends on the plant type.

What is cold recycling?

Cold recycling mixes RAP with bitumen emulsion or foamed bitumen, often with cement, without heating. It is used mainly for base layers covered by a new wearing course.

Why must RAP be crushed and screened?

Consistent RAP size and binder content are needed for consistent mix grading. Crushing and screening also break up clumps that would block feeders.
